English language learners require strong vocabulary
knowledge to increase their
second language skills. While having a basic vocabulary may help learners to
communicate some ideas to a degree, having a larger vocabulary will allow learners to
communicate more effectively, whether in speaking/listening or writing/reading. Not
knowing a certain word can
limit communication at times; however, in many
circumstances, a lexical slip can totally cease conversation. Insufficient vocabulary is
undoubtedly one of our second language learners' main problems, but how important
is vocabulary really?
Learning vocabulary should be no different than learning
any other aspect of a
language, such as grammar,
spelling, and pronunciation. However, vocabulary is a
unique difficulty since learners must master several
components of vocabulary
knowledge, such as polysemy, connotation and usage, part of speech, frequency, and
collocation.
What our students have been saying for a long time
—that they need more
vocabulary
—is more than a hunch; it is fact. As a result, teachers must be aware of the
types of classroom activities that can be used to assist their students in learning new
vocabulary.
As a result, we would want to provide some more effective practical
activities that we practice in our classroom.
Students recall a portion of what they see and a portion of what they hear, but they
remember much more of what they hear and see. As a result, while teaching, compile
a list of vocabulary. Point out the terms to draw the learners' attention to them. Another
easy yet effective practice activity is to utilize word cards with one question on each
one. The teacher divides the class
into pairs or small groups, and the students'
responsibility is to discuss and solve the vocabulary issue on the card. Ranking
activities are also beneficial to students since they help them build a large vocabulary
by learning quantity words in English. During the activities
the teacher should pay
more attention using single words, set phrases, variable phrases, phrasal verbs, idioms
as they rich vocabulary range of the learners.
English language students must expand their vocabulary expertise. Teachers should
combine explicit vocabulary teaching accompanied by
classroom activities that
reinforce previously studied material, given the time constraints of many learners. Such
activities will assist learners in focusing their attention on crucial vocabulary, requiring
them to retrieve the forms and meanings of new words, and encouraging learners to
identify and construct a personalized inventory of vocabulary learning strategies. Our
ultimate goal is to assist students in being active vocabulary learners once they leave
our classroom.
