These definitions are the generally accepted meanings of the terms used and are
intended to provide the reader with a working knowledge of the terms.
Abstract symbol. Also called “arbitrary symbol.” A type of symbol that is not visually or
conceptually related to the object represented. Such symbols are frequently geometric
shapes, such as circles, squares, and triangles.
